Grant money at Bell Herron Middle School supports poetry contest and student newspaper
It was so much fun to receive the Language Arts Grant. Another language arts class decided to take on the task of putting together a newspaper and contacted others to submit articles, etc., to this project. I notified all language arts teachers who wished to participate to have their students write poems for a contest and the winners would have their poems published and receive a small prize and recognition. I requested the help of some staff members to judge poems after language arts teachers first preselected from the ones that they received. Judges made decisions based on content and originality. The poems were coded so that no names appeared. The students were recognized at an assembly with gift certificates and ribbons. Their pictures appeared in the local paper. During the month of April, students were given extra credit for sharing poems throughout the month and received a treat for wearing a poetry badge each day. The money was used to buy the certificates, ribbons, treats, markers, several reference type books, and a poetry CD to be shared by staff members. It has been a fun and exciting year writing and sharing poetry with my students and the extra perks I was able to provide were made available by your company.
