Funding Brings Regional Poet to School
The third through sixth grades at Saint Clare School in Waveland, MS were entertained one afternoon with music, song, readings, and illustrations by Mike Artell. Mr. Artell is a regional poet, author, and illustrator who was able to come to Saint Clare because of the $250 grant they received. He showed the students how he used poetry in his book, Petit Rouge, Little Red Riding Hood. He also encouraged the young writers to take cartooning and put it to use with their poetry. Principal, Harriet Bellone, says of the students, "Those who had no desire to write prior to our ‘workshop’ are now picking up paper and pen to write! Poetry is alive and thriving here at St. Clare School."
