Poetry Peer Program at Philip Rogers School

Philip Roger’s School created a poetry peer program that started with eighth grade students creating their own books with original poetic and artistic work. These young authors orally presented their poetry books to students from kindergarten through third grade. Raynell Walls, a teacher at Philip Rogers, stated that, “Classroom teachers and students shared the enthusiasm exhibited by my students along with their eager listeners. My primary colleagues talked of the bond their students felt with their older peers. One colleague talked of the positive impact of male role models on her students. Boys realize that it’s ‘cool’ to read and write poetry.”
