Pine Richland Middle School Works With a Published Poet
"With your grant, we were able to bring in a professional writer to work with students in developing their skills and learn more about the writing process from firsthand contact. Mr. Samuel Hazo, published poet, author of several poetry books, poetry forum speaker and workshop leader from the Pittsburg Poetry Forum, conducted a poetry writing workshop with a large number of interested students at our middle school this past spring. His workshop helped students understand how the writing process works to reach audiences beyond the walls of the classroom. It provided the foundation and background to help more of our students to reach audiences who are interested in what they have to say and help them understand a process that will serve them in their language arts education beyond middle school.
As a language arts department, we believe that young people at the ages of 12-14 are eager to be heard and we try to offer ways through publication that they can meaningfully express themselves. This workshop provided a wonderful foundation for our students and was the answer to their request for a published author to visit our school to teach them about what a writer does and how it is done.
