JAVA JIVE Coffee House
St Mary’s High School held a 50’s style coffee house that was a huge success. It was held in the gym and they served 2200 pieces of pastry and coffee. Forty students participated by writing and performing original poetry, songs and dialogue. Grant money was also used to take several field trips and purchase Dover Editions of poetry collections by such authors as Emily Dickinson, Robert Frost, Robert Browning and Walt Whitman. The poets frequently analyze these works and uses them as models for original writing. Maryellen Migliore, the Poetry Club Advisor, stated that the grant money “brought poetry to life at St. Mary’s High School.”
