Grant money at Floyds Knobs Elementary School funds mentor texts

Thank you sincerely for the grant!  The grant was used to purchase mentor texts for use in our readers’ and writers’ workshops.  The books provide quality literature that can be used in mini-lessons to introduce and teach reading and writing skills.  The books are then available to the students to reread as they attempt to use the skills in their own reading and writing.  In addition, two books were purchased that can be used in our weekly family meetings which deal specifically with the social and emotional needs that gifted students struggle with, perfectionism and underachievement.  Being able to discuss their thoughts about book characters is much easier than to discuss their personal lives.  Books allow the students to reflect their opinions and needs in a safe environment and to learn about themselves from the characters that they read about.
Thank you for your support of this important grant opportunity.  I am honored to have been able to take part.  Our school has greatly benefited!
