Grant
money at Saint Augustine Canterbury School funds reading event and
poetry workshop
During
our Catholic Schools Week 2005 we held a Grandparent’s Day Poetry
Reading Event. For this delightful event, students in Grades 7
and 8 invited their grandparents to school and they proudly showcased
their best poetry in a Special Poetry Reading Event. Students
brought their Creative Communication Poetry Anthologies and they were
passed around and enjoyed by all. News of this event was
published in our school newsletter!
Additionally, 30 teachers were given a poetry workshop in-service in
which the lesson taught and accompanying handout focused on
“Recognizing Figurative Language and Symbolism in Poetry.”
Students were then given this lesson in class, which translated into a
“wonderful experience sharing student’s best work” an experience in the
classroom, which captivated and inspired them. In sum, these two
poetic experiences finally fostered an appreciation for poetry school
wide overall!
